59年ニューヨーク生まれ。5才でドラムを叩き始め、10才でデューク・エリントン楽団やカウント・ベイシー楽団のトロンボーン奏者であった父親と共演する。マーカス・ミラーとは幼なじみである。最初のビッグ・キャリアは80年にカーリー・サイモンのバックバンドに入ったことだ。そして82年、ウェザー・リポートにピーター・アースキン＝ジャコ・パストリアスの後任として、ヴィクター・ベイリーとともに加入し、一躍有名になる。85年にウェザーが解散。スティングの豪華バックバンドに加わり、マドンナのツアーにも参加する。89年には、彼のボーカルをフィーチャーした1stソロアルバム「Rhythm Deep」をリリース。ボーカリストとしてグラミーにノミネートされる。
こういった経歴やディスコグラフィーからわかるように、ジャズ・フュージョンのみならずポップスでも活躍する、数少ないオールラウンダーだ。
初めて聞いたのはウェザー・リポートの「Procession」だ。当時はスティーブ・ガッド型がはやりで、密度の濃いデッドでざらざらした感じのドラムが多かった。しかし、オマーはぱらぱらと明るい音づくりで、後ジャコ期のパーカション的アプローチは、かなり新鮮だった。これはザビヌルのねらいでもあったんだろうね。その、はじけてる感じが良かった。
スーパードラマーは、みんなハタチそこそこから活躍し始めるね。
ガッドは計算づめ、オマーは野生の勘、で叩いているというイメージだ。しかし、そこがちょっとひっかかっていた。確かにかっこいいけど、なんかおっつけるとこがいや。最後に帳尻を合わせればいいやってとこが気に入らない。それは、デニス・チェンバースにもいえるんだよね。ちょっと強引にもっていって、野生のカンで丸く納める。
でも、最近は結構見直してる。こりゃオマーかなっていう個性もあるし、ノリもジャストで自分の好みだ。多少強引なところはそれも良しってところかな。フツーはないよなという手順のフレーズも多く、勉強になる。
しかしながら、ソロはもろにブラコンの歌モノ。ドラムは確かにオマーかなという感じではあるが、あんまり面白いとは言えない。マーカス・ミラーの1st,2ndソロも歌モノなんだけど、オマーの1stはそれそっくり。10年振りの2ndは、まあ、コンテンポラリーっていえるのかよくわかんないけど、1stの路線を踏襲している。この辺、盟友のヴィクター・ベイリーとも似たような道を歩んでいるかも。そもそも最近の「ブラコン」ってなんかポジションが難しいよね。特徴が薄れてしまった。ファンク・ビートだとブラコンってわけじゃないし、バラードはポップスと一緒だし。
ウェザーの「Procession」と「Domino Theory」をまず聞こう。オマーの良さを最も引き出してるのはザビヌルだと思っている。一般にはスティングの「Bring On The Night」は評価が高い。リトナーの「Festival」、＋カールトンの「Larry & Lee」もややイージーだが割と好き。
ギャラはとっても高いらしい。
