14才からプロドラマーとして活動を始める。最初の輝かしい経歴は、79年にフランク・ザッパのバンドに加入したことだ。ザッパ・バンドでの最初のレコーディングは、問題作「ジョーのガレージ」である。ここですでに完成された、素晴らしいテクニックを見せてくれる。ザッパの元に２年半滞在し、その後スタジオの仕事を始める。その頃、レコーディングの現場は機械ドラムが席巻しており、ドラマーにとって厳しい時代だった。しかし、80年代後半のヴィニーのレコーディング数はすさまじい。機械のドラムに飽きたのか、人間の良さを見直したのか、いろいろ理由はあると思われるが。
彼は機械に勝った男なのである。
ヴィニーは千のスタイルを持つと言われている。どんな注文にも応えることができ、読譜は完璧。リズムもタイムも良く、グルーブのコントロールは自由自在。ガッドやらの仕事をかっさらってしまった。スタイルの柔軟さはソロアルバムを聴くと顕著だ。どフュージョン風、グルーブドラマー風、トニー・ウィリアムズ風と、ホントに１人で叩いてるのかよというできになっている。
